Tuesday, 10/26/10, we will be having a test on Chapter 11 in Language (nouns, pronouns,and adjectives). Today, the students were given a study packet to practice for the test. The packet is due Tuesday. They do not have to start the packet this weekend, but it may help them if they do. Students will also be able to use their outline on the test.

Study group permission slips were sent home today. We will have a study group on Monday, 10/25/10, after school from 3-4pm in my room (235). Students may only attend if they have a signed permission slip.

Another GREAT day in Language Arts!

Today we continued learning and practicing the procedures of our classroom. We also began discussing and writing down our reading and writing goals for this year. To wrap up the day, we read the book "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" by Dr. Seuss. Together we talked about how this book applies to their eighth grade year and we also found some nouns while reading!

The school year is quickly approaching. I am looking forward to a wonderful 2010-2011 school year!

To prepare for the year, on the school website are classroom supply lists. This year the teachers for 6th-8th grades have made a universal supply list. Please make sure to check the list so you are ready for the school year:). *Staples is having some great sales:)

Don't for get about your summer reading. Make sure to read and fill out the worksheet for the novel you selected. There is also the opportunity for extra credit, simply read a non-fiction book and fill out the form that goes along with it. Happy reading!:)

Happy Friday!

What a busy couple weeks!

Language Arts:

Together we discovered the words of Abraham Lincoln by reading the Gettysburg Address. Through our reading we learned that even words from over 200 years ago still stand strong today!

To celebrate Memorial Day the students learned about the lives of our country's Veterans through listening to interviews. They then created a star to honor the dedication these men and women gave to protect our country.

Next week we will be writing narratives about a "vacation" to the Polar Seas.

5P Science:

We are discovering the open oceans through MARE. Today we broke down the parts of the Earth. We learned that 1/4 of our planet is Land and the other 3/4 oceans! Did you know that only 1/8th of our Earth is able to be lived in.

Along with MARE we are also learning about magnetism and electricity.

Busy times here at OCS!

-The scientists are creating PowerPoint presentations; the topic planets of our solar system! The projects are being completed in class and will be presented next week.

Eighth Grade Language Arts:

In Literature we have been learning about the Holocaust. We first met Anne Frank and learned of the struggles her and her family went through. Next we read the book: The Boy Who Dared, by Susan Campbell Bartoelli. Through the genre of historical fiction, we as readers, read about a boy named Helmuth, a German, who fought to stand up to the Nazi's propaganda.

Fifth Grade Science:

The 5P scientist have launched into the unit of Astronomy. We will be discovering solar system and the unique qualities of our planet.
